Book Ideas

BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!

Elli LOVES books! She has learned how to say book (she doesn't know Mom yet though) and she knows the sign for book. She uses them both frequently all day, everyday. I would love it if you could all share your kid's favorites so that I can compile a list to take to the library now that RSV is almost over. (We haven't been for months because of RSV.) Elli is mainly into picture books right now, she gets a little impatient with me when I try to read the words. She just likes to point at all the fun things on each page.

I would love some ideas for Bradley too. His collection right now includes some chapter books, a a ridiculous amount of animal books, and several Star Wars books. Broadening his horizons would be a good thing. :) With summer break approaching faster than I'd like to admit, a list for him to take to the library would be a fun thing.

Thanks everyone!

"Red ripe strawberry, big hungry bear" - that's not the title exactly but the premise of the story is a mouse picking a red ripe strawberry & trying to hide it from the bear. My kids can recite the book in its entirety! Love it! As for older books... sorry, girlie books probably aren't what you're looking for. Except, what about the OZ books by Frank L. Baum?

well for Elli's, and Aaron's age. I like wordless books. Eric Carle has a few, like 1,2,3, To the Zoo. and Will You Be My Friend. That Is Not My Cat has words, but not many, and then for The Very Busy Spider, I just make the sounds, and don't worry about the words just yet.
Aaron also loves lift the flap books. There are several on Fisher Price.com that he loves.

Tami,
I hope it's okay that I've been reading your blog...I found the address on your FB profile. Since getting to know both you and Wayne at college it's been so much fun to see what you've been up to after all these years.

About books: I have a 22 month old and she loves books too. She loves rhyming Dr. Seuss books. "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb", "The Foot Book", "Inside Outside Upside Down" are some of our favorites. I also have a 2nd grade boy like your Bradley. He loves it when I read to him so we are working on the Harry Potter books. But on his own he really enjoys reading the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park, The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney and The Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey. Hope that helps! We really LOVE books at our house too. My husband Bryan keeps having to build me more and more bookcases because I fill them so quickly. :)

Our favorite toddler picture books. Simple and few words:

Don't know if you can access this link:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/651201?shelf=perfect-for-toddlers-too

Let's see...
Anything from Sandra Boynton
Where is the green sheep?
First the egg
Tumble Bumble
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Anything by Karen Katz
Llama LLama, Red Pajama
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?
But Not The Hippopotamus (one of the Sandra Boynton books).

For Bradley, I wonder if he's ready for "Carry On, Mr. Bowditch." It's a newberry winner from 1955.

"Readers today are still fascinated by "Nat," an eighteenth-century nautical wonder and mathematical wizard. Nathaniel Bowditch grew up in a sailor's worldSalem in the early days, when tall-masted ships from foreign ports crowded the wharves. But Nat didn't promise to have the makings of a sailor; he was too physically small. Nat may have been slight of build, but no one guessed that he had the persistence and determination to master sea navigation in the days when men sailed only by "log, lead, and lookout." Nat's long hours of study and observation, collected in his famous work, The American Practical Navigator (also known as the "Sailors" Bible"), stunned the sailing community and made him a New England hero."

Then there is My Father's Dragon, a much simpler chapter book. It has two other books after it if he likes it.

James and the Giant Peach.

Maybe Naya Nuki...

"After being taken prisoner by an enemy tribe, a Shoshoni girl escapes and makes a thousand-mile journey through the wilderness in search of her own people."

It's a simple chapter book.
